The 39 Steps (aka The Thirty-Nine Steps) 1935 86 NR 3.5 out of 5 ducks
Richard is visiting London from Canada. At the end of Mr. Memory's show, he meets Annabella, who's trying to get away from secrets agents. He opts to help her and hide her at his apartment, but they were followed and she was killed during the night -- but not before she tells him, vaguely, about the 39 Steps. Richard worries he would be a suspect in her death, he tries to break up the spy's secret ring to help prove his innocence. Over four days, he wanders from the train into the countryside, is shot by Prof. Jordan (but a hymn book stops the bullet), and he confides in a cop... who promptly turns him over to Scotland Yard; he flees from custody (with one handcuff still on his right wrist). He gets hooked to Pamela, they escape, spent the night at an inn, where Pamela uncuffs herself, but stays after she overhears the cop (and realizes he's telling the truth about people after him and the 39 Steps). The cops chat with her, but she doesn't give up Richard. The cops follow Pamela, sure she'll lead them to Richard, and she does, where the two meet at the Palladium. A tune from the show with Mr. Memory is familiar to Richard, and he realizes the information about 39 Steps is in Mr. Memory's head (he memorizes everything, quickly and forever). Someone asks what are the 39 Steps, and he begins answering ("The 39 Steps is an organization of spies, collecting information on behalf of the foreign office of... "), but is shot; the crowd goes nuts. Backstage, he recites the secrets of how to make aircraft with silent engines, says it's nice to be off his mind, and dies. Moving film reel
