5x2 (aka Five Times Two) 2004 90 R 3.5 out of 5 ducks
The notion is five stages of a couple meeting until they divorce (five scenes times two people, hence the title). Starting with Marion and Gilles on the day they sign divorce papers, and working backwards. They have a hot lovin' session afterwards, but when Marion says no, he essentially rapes her. We next see their talking of affairs outside the marriage with another couple, and while it's an open conversation, we begin seeing cracks in the marriage. Another step back and Marion is in with the OB hearing an update on her pregnancy (the couple have a son together, Nicolas), and a complicated birth (where Gilles hides in the car and doesn't come inside). Another musical interlude, and we see the couple getting married (and they seem to be getting younger in each scene, too). After Gilles falls asleep on their wedding night before they consummate the marriage, she goes for a walk in the garden, meets an English-only speaking guy, they share a cigarette and he tries to force her to kiss him; she rushes back to Gilles and snuggles up with him. A bit more music, and we see the couple meeting whilst at a holiday resort, forming a closer connection to the casual awareness they had of each other from a previous encounter. (Of course, Gilles has always been a jerk, and he is chatting up Marion while with Valerie, his girl of four years, at his side). Gilles ditches Valerie to go swim with Marion at sunset.
