On the eve of the record-breaking home-run of Mark McGuire, Roger Maris? wife watches with a sense of nostalgia as McGuire breaks the record. We drift back to 1961 and we see Mantle and Maris as they compete to break Babe Ruth?s record og 60 home runs in 1927. Mantle falls behind and ends his try for the record-breaker after straining the muscles in his arm. Maris is battling the pressures of the expectations of the fans, his family, and a smattering of hate mail from fans who seems to think breaking Babe Ruth?s record is a travesty. Maris finally manages to break the record, with Babe Ruth?s widow looking on (and not happy). Leap forward to today, and McGuire. (The name of the film, with the asterisk, was a discussion of the commissioners talking about how the season was longer when Maris and Mantle were playing versus Babe Ruth, and they felt the asterisk would be to ensure the home run record reflected the longer season, hence, the asterisk would be to footnote the matter.)
