A documentary told from the perspective of Colin, Yao Ming's 29-year-old translator. Yao, 7-foot-6, joined the Houston Rockets in 2002; the film covers his first year, from coming to America, Colin translating virtually every part of Yao's life for several months until he began getting a handle on English, the works. A humble guy by American standards, he was a huge hit with fans. There were some words and such between himself and some of the other players, including the NBA powerhouse Shaquille O'Neal. In the end the Rockets didn't win the Playoffs (against O'Neal's Lakers). Through it all, Yao never really lost his humble, non-celebrity nature, and at the end of the film returns to China at the end of the season, as Colin speaks of what he learned about the Chinese people and himself in the process; at last check, Yao is still with the Rockets. (There's also the running theme that as the only China-born member of the NBA, he was an ambassador to his country, a fact that seemed never far from Yao's awareness though a glut of reminders from all around.) |
